London Calling! the Musical - Carrie Lyrics

Music and Lyrics by Noël Coward.

Carrie as a baby was a darling little pet,
And everybody loved her from the Vicar to the Vet.
Her manners when at school were most ingenuous and quaint,
She had the reputation of a little plaster saint.

(Refrain 1:)
Carrie was a careful girl,
Such a very careful girl,
Nobody imagined from the day that she was weaned,
That underneath the sweetness was the temper of a fiend,
Carrie was a careful girl,
Quite a little cultured pearl,
The teachers all adored her and the pupils did the same,
At every sort of girlish sport she quickly made a name
And nobody suspected that she played a double game,
Carrie was a careful girl.

(Refrain 2:)
Carrie was a careful girl,
Such a very careful girl,
She stole out on the landing while the others were at prayers,
And rubbed a lot of grease upon the dormitory stairs,
Carrie was a careful girl,
In her little cot she'd curl,
The teacher fell down half a flight and landed on her head,
And naturally to Carrie not a single word was said
'Cos they found a pat of butter in her little sister's bed,
Carrie was a careful girl.

Carrie had a father with a rather mottled past,
And evils of heredity are bound to show at last,
But Carrie always realized the danger from the start,
So she stole dear father's diary and learnt it off by heart.

(Refrain 3:)
Carrie was a careful girl,
Such a very careful girl,
When papa departed to the angels meek and mild,
He left a lot of souvenirs and maxims to his child,
Carrie was a careful girl,
And when in the social whirl,
Though she wasn't tempted by the usual forms of vice,
She said she thought that games of chance were really awfully nice
But still she never played a game without her father's dice,
Carrie was a careful girl.

(Refrain 4:)
Carrie was a careful girl,
Such a very careful girl,
So far and no further she was quite prepared to go,
But still she took precautions 'cos of course you never know,
Carrie was a careful girl,
Once she met a noble Earl,
He thought that Carrie lived alone and so she let him think,
She asked him to her flat one night to have a little drink
But she had her Auntie Jessie underneath the kitchen sink,
Carrie was a careful girl.
